Episode 3: Taking Flight
Welcome to our third Feel Teal Talk podcast. This episode takes you on a
"behind the scenes" tour of your host's recording studio of fun
and affirms that Comedylove sneaks up on you when you least expect it!
We also have an update from Feel Teal Club founder Deb Stevens, as well
as another beautiful song tribute. This week's theme is "Taking Flight"
because my guest today is our newest Titan of Teal, Benita Robinson
Osbey who created the organization Teal Butterflies. The significance of
the name? TEAL is the color that represents Ovarian Cancer. BUTTERFLIES
represent resilience as butterflies go through many journeys as they
soar. We most certainly are soaring! In the past week, after giving
thanks through dedications and music, we've received some incredible
press about our new podcast and encourage YOU to continue spreading the
word of awareness.

Quilt going global

The Feel Teal Club and its Titans are about to begin another exciting task!

Together with the Outlaw Quilters Guild and WFLAG (We Fight Like A Girl), the "titans" will be making a collection of "blocks" which are to be part of an Awareness Quilt.....the finished product will then be displayed at various events! (Venue details TBA`)

Here's one sample of a block already made (Jo Foster)

If you have been touched by ovarian cancer, and wish to participate in this awareness project, please send an email to debbie@feeltealclub.com with your details.

FROM LISA

#1
The blocks must be 12.5 inches. The size being 12.5" leaves a 1/4" seam allowance all around. Once sewn, the "finished" size is 12" so make SURE the Titans understand the reasoning for the 12.5". This is the MOST IMPORTANT THING!!! TIP: If anyone is doing embroidery on their block it might be best to embroider first and then cut it to the right size afterward in case of shrink, pucker or anything like that.

#2 No real rule except it should reflect the theme of ovarian cancer awareness. That can be just about anything from a "memorial" block honoring a fallen OC warrior woman. It can be a block that is pieced with smaller bits of fabric just as long as it is finished to the size above. We have some people out there who are supporting their family
members undergoing treatment. Their take will be completely different.
Really, there is NO right or wrong type of quilt block & that is the beauty of it. Swim upstream on this one, embrace your individuality, creativity, coz this is not gonna be your typical quilt project.

#3 Color this is pretty much a personal choice but a lot of ladies are doing shades of teal & including black or brown (teal & brown is IN right now) with accents of white, silver, purple and even pink. Some manufacturers put out specific themed fabrics out there with the ribbons and it changes all the time.

I think a lot of people are having trouble with the concept that this is going to be much like a sampler. Every block will be so different, reflecting the individual person's style & skill set. The ONLY real hard and fast rule that cannot be deviated from is the size. Awareness is the theme & the international flavor reflecting unity for a common cause will show up in all the different kinds of items that will be joined together, kind of like a global "holding hands" showing love
& respect for one another. When the quilts are finished I feel like
every time we look at it we will see something new, open our eyes in a new way.

Making it real, with our Titans of Teal

Worldwide, the colour TEAL was chosen to represent Ovarian cancer, though sadly,  it is still yet to be widely recognised.
Globally we know to “Think Pink” for Breast cancer and there’s a constant source of funding flowing as a result-

For Ovarian cancer to achieve the same status, “Feel Teal” came into existence-

This year, our club is delivering a new approach with a clearer emphasis on "survivors" and "supporters"....giving the public a "behind the scenes" look into our various projects, & the ongoing struggle we face in order to receive the same level of recognition as the "think pink" campaigns!!

What makes a "titan of teal"?

She is many things.....
A survivor, supporter, friend, sister, daughter, nanna, mother, wife.....she is a nurse or a poet, an actress....a comedian who honours a "fallen" commrade, a daughter remembering her mother, a musician sharing a tune...a child.
She is passionate & resourceful and a positive force!
She LOVES the colour "teal" and will walk, run or paint her toenails to proudly show it!
She is gentle and kind but can be strong and loud! She thrives on creative ideas, no task too big or too hard!
She is tenacious and determined....her convictions are unwavering.....she inspires & offers hope to everyone... her passion is contagious! She always sees a bigger picture with an enthusiasm to share her vision....her committment is admirable, she won't take "no" for an answer!
She owns a website or Blog, and most likely a Facebook page or Group....
With wings to fly she carries her message.....always about "awareness".......always to
feel the teal!

Come read their stories..... http://titansofteal.yolasite.com/testimonials.php

Do you know of a Titan??? We would love to hear from you!

Will Congress Repeal Health Care Reform?

  • Dec. 10th, 2010 at 12:37 AM

The following was written by Barbara O’ Brien blogger for The Mahablog, Crooks and Liars, AlterNet, to name a few!
Barbara has earned the notoriety of being a panelist at the Yearly Kos Convention and was a featured guest blogger at the Take Back America Conference in Washington, DC.

As soon as Republicans knew they had won a majority of House seats in the midterm elections, GOP leaders vowed to repeal health care reform. Can they do this? And should they?

Frankly, chances that the health care reform bill could be repealed completely are remote, especially since such repeal would have to override President Obama’s veto, and the Senate still has a Democratic majority.

House Republicans say they have some tricks up their sleeves, such as refusing to provide funds in the budget to implement health care reform. However, provisions of the law that will expand Medicaid and help subsidize private insurance won’t kick in until 2014. Until then, there’s not much the House can do to the budget to stop health care reform from going forward, short of defunding the entire Health and Human Services department.

Another “trick” might be to dismantle the bill piece by piece. One provision that many people want to remove is the individual mandate, which will require most Americans to obtain health insurance or pay a tax penalty. This provision also kicks in in 2014, and it’s one that Baby Boomers in particular will want to fight to keep.

Here’s why: Beginning in 2014, private insurance companies will no longer be able to refuse to insure someone because of a pre-existing condition. But without an individual mandate, there will be no incentive for younger and healthier people to purchase health insurance until the time comes when they need it. This means those left in the insurance “risk pool” will be older, and that drives up the cost of insurance.

By the time we reach 50, nearly all of us have “pre-existing conditions.” Some of our conditions are common, and some are not – mesothelioma, for example, is rarely diagnosed in patients younger than 50. And without Medicare or other good insurance, mesothelioma treatment would be financially devastating.

But without the individual mandate requiring that healthier people share in the cost of insuring all of us, the health insurance premium bills for people aged 50 to 65 will be ruinous. We can scrap health care reform entirely, of course, but keep in mind that if you lose your insurance before you reach Medicare age you may not be able to purchase insurance at all, at any price, if you have a pre-existing condition.

Awareness is contagious!

Staying in touch is what builds good communication skills between people and business.
The same applies when networking...promoting, advertising and marketing, all play a considerable role if you intend to keep traffic flowing while gaining more public interest.

Raising awareness is no easy task, so, keeping all the "above" in mind is necessary if we are to succeed!
With a lot of hard work, long hours, and NO pay, we forge onwards....always working towards the same goal and for the ultimate result.....an early screening method for detecting ovarian cancer.

Awareness for ovarian cancer is growing-

More and more people are getting on-board the "awareness" phenonmenan which is great news for the cause and even better for those involved.

There's still a long way to go, especially if we are to carry the same status as that of our "Gynaecological-sister"; breast cancer.
The words "Teal" & "Awareness" are synonymous with ovarian cancer, the results evident when using the Google search engine.
For example, type in 'teal" 'awareness' 'ovarian cancer' and a Google search will deliver 51,200 results....however, type in 'pink' 'awareness' 'breast cancer', (9,690,000 result) and you see exactly what we are up against!
However, progress is being made and we owe much to the internet and the use of Social networks.
At Facebook, there's definitely signs of "change" with new "awareness" pages sprouting; new designs and logo's,and more contacts! Let's face it, it's the list of friends which we all rely on when building our awareness-pyramid............and  the Feel Teal Club is no exception. We pride ourselves on cross-promotion, giving everyone an equal opportunity to share their information whilst sharing the crucial awareness message further!

The Feel Teal Club remains committed to sharing relevant links and always happy to promote. Constantly updating our pages to keep the public informed, if it's in the news, the Feel Teal Club has you covered!
Our message is still the same but with one small difference—we’re committed to raising awareness, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, until a diagnostic test has been found!

UPDATES.......To encourage the public interaction, a Guestbook is now operating to accept messages of support.....Stay tuned for the Club's Chat-room!

"Awareness" is contagious so let's keep spreading the message.
