The “Feel teal Friday” campaign was launched September 4th, 2009, but due to public-interest, has been extended until December 31st, 2009.
The first ‘online’ social media event of its kind, with the aim to
help support the need for ovarian cancer awareness and research, now working alongside musicians to make some more noise!
The Go Research Fund, legendary Songwriter/Producer/former bass-player/co-founder of “KC & the Sunshine band”& seven-time Grammy Award winner; Rick Finch, Awareness campaigner/author; Debbie Stevens, song lyricist, poet; Lance Toohey & Australian Rock/Pop musician; Anthony Snape and our friends at Flip Side To Music, have joined forces to raise awareness & funds, for Ovarian cancer-
The Go Research Fund vision, is to improve the health outcomes for women suffering from ovarian and gynaecological cancers and to increase community awareness of these diseases.
The Challenge - is to find a blood test that will allow all women to be screened for ovarian cancer and diagnosed while the disease is in its early stages.
Our Spokesman; Rick Finch, has generously offered to donate 50% of sales from his latest CD, "For All Reasons", which in turn will help fund the need for an early detection test for ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer doesn’t have a screening test. So it is vital that women are aware of the symptoms.
Ovarian cancer is often referred to as a silent killer because its symptoms can be vague and similar to the symptoms of many other conditions that can be part of everyday life.
Every woman will have experienced one or more of these symptoms at some stage. But if any of these symptoms are unusual for you and they persist, it is important to see your doctor.

* One in 72 women will develop ovarian cancer (lifetime risk).
* One in 95 women will die from ovarian cancer.3
* A woman’s lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer is 1.39 percent.
* A woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer and dying from it is 1.05 percent.
Survival and stage at diagnosis4
* The overall five-year relative survival rate for all women with ovarian cancer is 46 percent. This means that compared to women in the general population, five years from the time of diagnosis only 46 percent of women with ovarian cancer are still alive.
* However, the survival rate improves greatly to 93 percent if the cancer is diagnosed at an early stage before it has spread. Only 19 percent of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at this local stage.
* Approximately 75 percent of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage after the cancer has spread beyond the ovary.
* The five-year survival rate for women with ovarian cancer has not significantly increased in the past 30 years—a mere 8 percent.
* Women diagnosed with ovarian cancer from 1975 to 1979 experienced a five-year survival rate of approximately 38 percent. Today this rate is approximately 46 percent.
Ovarian cancer survival rates have not improved as significantly as those of some other cancers that affect primarily women. For example, women diagnosed with breast cancer from 1975 to 1979 experienced a five-year survival rate of 75 percent and today this rate is 89 percent.

Years later, I became a baby boomer diva with women of my own age bracket, women doing remarkable things with their lives, and almost every single one, had a Blog, or two! My interest aroused, I wanted to know more. A Blog was definitely something worth trying, and why not? I wonder if I could do this? Before giving it any more thought, I took the plunge, daring to step outside my comfort zone, to join my sisters by sharing my thoughts and information with the world! One more challenge in life, and one that had been inspired by these incredible ladies to boldly go where I had never gone before.
Here we were, women over fourty flying through cyberspace at ridiculous speeds, taking risks and daring to test the waters on all new ideas, then reporting back eagerly share with others. I was on my way!
Already a published author, the world of Blogs became a vessel to opening more doors, with this, I found it easier to try my hand at other genres, posting pieces here and there, the online readers, posting critique. It was also a great medium for advertising my work, using the simple Blogspot device to start, then moving up to Wordpress, I thank the genius who designed the wysiwyg text editing format!
Just like the boomer nation women, bloggers are always on the move!
My website had to take a back seat while I set up shop, and with advice from each person, I took their tips and began putting to good use, but my first Blog required a title, a name which would reflect me-Freesiafever became the offspring of my website, A Scent Of A Freesia, still sharing similar information on ovarian cancer, but allowing me the space to explore, further expanding my need to talk, encouraging others to follow my lead. That’s what I define a baby boomer as in today’s world, a leader!
We have a wealth of life-experience under our belts, and we also have the skill and knowledge now to take us on greater adventures. The joy of reading a post you can relate to, the fun of hunting down new resources and tools, everything from widgets to feed burners, embedding music and videos, it never ends. I have at last found a place that can carry my voice, and thanks to various Blogs, have set it free! This diva from ‘down under’ has plenty to say, and plenty of Blogs that can meet all requirements.
I continue the ride of my life, meeting new people as I go, collecting new pointers while following links, to even more Blogs.
It’s all about finding what a Blog, can do for you- With work, I have found it a faster tool for hosting, so now Blogging has replaced a website for the music ezine I am affiliated with, it saves us so much more time, less headaches and quicker feedback! So you see, there’s a Blog for every occasion, and if we can do it, so can you!

I started out slightly apprehensive, unaware of the great news which was about to land in my lap!

Meanwhile, moving right along.....the host of a Global show in Texas;Women Power Talk Radio, the divine Raven Blair Davis, kindly emailed me to suggest I have a go at something to do with health...what news could I report about Health????? AHA! OVARIAN CANCER!
So, even with a massive electrical storm hanging over our heads here in Sydney, I took the challenge, and dared to beat the odds...it worked! This coming Wednesday, my brief but worthy report will be aired on Raven's radio programme. What a hoot and what another amazing day working alongside the BBD'S!

So, here I go again.......what will I write about today?
I might begin at the beginning, it usually helps-
My mother was diagnosed[late] with advanced ovarian cancer, just as she was meant to be tripping the light fantastic....it was a time when many were focused on Sydney's upcoming Olympic games, and pretty much that seemed to be the topic on everyone's lips. Not ours, not my family. The words we were speaking were jumbled, nothing made any sense and time was running out! My mother was only 63 years of age....she celebrated this birthday in hospital, just a couple of weeks after her surgery. Had I paid closer attention, I would have seen what she had been trying to convey to me, in her 'round about' manner....I just wasn't listening, you see i had not faced the possibility of losing her, I'd shut those horrible thoughts and images out! I was the positive thinker. I HAD t be! But, as the weeks rolled by into months, and my mother's health rapidly went down-hill, so too did our time together......the clock was silently ticking away, and just as mum had received her 1st dose of chemotherapy, I began re-packing for my next trip back up to be with her, not knowing what lay ahead. The date was July 3rd, 2000.....just 20 days short of my coming 40th birthday...my bags were ready for my journey up the coast to be with mum the following day[Tuesday] and I was really eager to get going-The phone rang, it was a neighbour of my parents calling to inform me mum had fallen during the night....she requested I forget Tuesday, and get up there asap! So, as i confirmed my sudden change in plans with my brood at home, I swallowed a half-cold cup of coffee, tied the laces on my shoes, and began checking that all was in order before leaving.
Again, the phone rang. I picked it up rather anxiously, and then I heard dad's sullen shaky voice talking down the line.."Deb...your mother is gone..." In between his sobbing and my confusion, the world I once knew was changed forever!
Five months after her diagnosis, my dear mother had lost her battle with Ovarian cancer.
This is one of the main reasons I tackled the challenge to become computer savvy[as they say] in order to get the message out! This included a book of poetry published as a tribute to her memory, and as my first method in sharing my story. I desperately wanted to reach all those other people, who like me, had been completely unaware of its existence. AWARENESS-knowing or conscious of something,cognizant

So, this brings me to where I am today-
Still spreading the message, but taking my writing to a whole new level. Now, five books later and another [non-fiction-Silent Denial] in the proceeds, I guess you could say I have come a long way since I stepped on board the www. I still have so much more to offer, so don't think this is the end....not by a long shot!
